1 November to 14 December 2021 - EU Research & Innovation Days ASEAN 2021 is the annual flagship event of EURAXESS ASEAN and its partners. It is designed as a platform for early-career researchers, innovators, practitioners, and activists from across the ASEAN region to explore opportunities for collaboration and career development with European partners.
The Konrad Adenauer Foundation, the German-Southeast Asian Center of Excellence for Public Policy and Good Governance (CPG), Faculty of Law, Thammasat University and the Asian Governance Foundation (AGF) jointly organised this seminar.

The massive humanitarian crisis engendered by the Feb 1 coup in Myanmar has rattled the 10-member ASEAN. Over the past few weeks, ASEAN has tried hard to find a way out of the crisis. To deliberate upon the issue, a special summit of ASEAN is scheduled to be held on April 24 in Jakarta.

When a crisis seems to threaten regional states unevenly, the incentive for cooperation weakens says Choi Kang, Acting President and Director in the Center for Foreign Policy and National Security at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies, South Korea. He argues that the Covid-19 pandemic has seen individual rather than collective action, and existing institutions that should have been part of a global response have been discredited.
Both China and the United States will emerge from the current crisis with their reputations damaged, says David Capie, Associate Professor in International Relations at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. He argues that today’s great power struggles are making it harder than ever for small and middle powers to navigate.
US-China relations are now failing ‘the rest of Asia’ says Tsutomu Kikuchi, adjunct senior fellow at the Japan Institute of International Affairs. He argues that we can’t narrow the range of policy choices available to us as we push for a rules-based order.

‘Building Social Research Capacities in Higher Education Institutions in Lao PDR and Malaysia’ is a multi-country Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education joint project involving higher education institutions from both the EU and ASEAN countries.

The 2019 conference brought together eminent thinkers and academics from more than ten countries across Asia and Europe, who discussed a wide range of topics such as western and non-western approaches to international relations, European and Asian security architectures, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the emerging Indo-Pacific construct.

The ASEAN in Today's World (AsTW) 2018, a two-week international study program, was co-organised by the Asia-Europe Institute (AEI), Universiti Malaya and Kyushu University from 22 February to 7 March 2018 at AEI.
On April 10, 2018, H.E. Cristiano Maggipinto, the Ambassador of Italy delivered a public lecture at the Asia-Europe Institute (AEI) titled “Italy and ASEAN: Political, Cultural and Economic Prospects of a New Relationship”. The Jean Monnet Ambassador Lecture series is a regular lecture series hosted by the AEI with the aim of fostering dialogue and knowledge sharing between the EU diplomatic mission in Malaysia and the general public as well as students and academicians in particular.
Asia-Europe Institute (AEI) hosted the Comparative Regionalism Workshop 2018 as part of its activities as a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence on April 6 and 7, 2018. The workshop was titled Bridging Regional Knowledge and was conducted by invited lecturer, Dr Paul Gillespie. Dr Gillespie is the Deputy Director at the Institute of British-Irish Studies, and a Senior Research Fellow adjunct in the School of Politics and International Relations, University of College Dublin.

5 April - Vientiane Times: National University of Laos (NUOL) lecturers are currently gaining an understanding of the BRECIL Project - Building Social Research Capacities in Higher Education Institutions in Laos and Malaysia - at the National University of Laos from April 4-6.
On March 2, 2018, Dr. Sameer Kumar, Senior Lecturer, Asia-Europe Institute, delivered a special talk at MRC, Universiti Malaya, on ‘Industry 4.0 (Industrie 4.0) and its implication on ASEAN’ to a visiting group of Postgraduate students and faculty members of a well-known business Institute in India.
Apart from Malaysia, Dr Rajah was also well-known in Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and Laos as the outcome of his economic researchers were evident in the formulation of government policies in these countries.

I have been driven by a desire to understand Malaysian society, especially Malay perspectives - and I have worked on the assumption that a knowledge of history is vital.
The Asia-Europe Institute (AEI), Universiti Malaya along with Maastricht University in Brussels, Belgium collaborated for the 3rd AEI-ASEM Summer School programme 2017 with the theme “Cultural Pluralism in Asia and Europe” which was successfully conducted from 24 July to 4 August 2017.
This programme was a joint effort with ASEM partner countries and the Jean Monnet Network on Challenges to Multiculturalism and Multilateralism, and was supported by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia along with the EU Centre in Singapore.
The sixth and final award recipient went to South-East Asia expert Prof Dr Anthony Milner, in the category of Outstanding Contribution to the People of Malaysia.
