| Brief History of CoE The Institute of Ocean and Earth Sciences (IOES), University of Malaya has its roots in the University of Malaya Maritime Research Centre (UMMReC) which was established in 2003 in response to the national call for more concerted research in the marine sciences, considering the importance of Malaysia’s abundant marine heritage as well as to coordinate and lead all research activities and consultancies in marine and maritime research at the University of Malaya. The establishment of IOES was approved by the University of Malaya Management on 23 October 2007 and officially launched on 17 January 2008. The IOES was approved by the University of Malaya Board of Directors and under the management of Deputy Vice-Chancellor Office (Research & Innovation) on 17 April 2008. The IOES received further accolade by being recognised as a Marine Centre of Excellence (COE) under the National Oceanography Directorate (NOD), Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. The uniqueness of IOES lies in its multidisciplinary team of distinguished researchers who are leading scientists in the areas of mangrove ecology, algae biotechnology, coastal eco-engineering, air-ocean interaction and climate change, maritime law and maritime culture. In the IOES, the blend of natural scientists and social scientists provide a formidable team to respond to both scientific and socio-economic issues confronting the coastal and maritime systems. |

Function of CoE
The main strengths of IOES lie in the diversity, depth and range of expertise available, particularly in the rare expertise of maritime law and policy, political science and international relations, socio-economics, maritime history, culture and geopolitics, climate change, marine geology, mangrove ecology, marine biotechnology, marine biodiversity and marine genomics. These combined research strengths, unique in the Malaysian scenario, will allow IOES to integrate multidisciplinary approaches to the study of fundamental scientific problems and to discover new and novel products and processes in our oceans. |

Best Student Poster Presentation of 2nd XMAS Symposium - Winnie Lau The Second Xiamen Symposium on Marine Environmental Sciences was held in Xiamen, China from January 7 to 9, 2015. In this symposium, a graduate student, Winnie Lau Lik Sing, from Institute of Ocean and Earth Science (IOES), University of Malaya was sponsored by Xiamen University to attend the three days Symposium. Her abstract entitled “Rapid detection of harmful Raphidophyte, Chattonella sp using whole-cell FISH” was accepted as poster presentation during student session in the symposium. |

| Best Student Oral Macroalgae at the 5th Congress of International Society for Applied Phycology 2014 Dr. Yusrizam Sharifuddin and Phd Student, Mr. Chin Yao Xian has won the Award of Excellence- Best Student Oral Macroalgae at the 5th Congress of International Society for Applied Phycology 2014, Sydney, Australia (22 -27 June 2014). Mr. Chin's paper was on " Yao-Xian Chin, Yusrizam Sharifuddin, Phaik Eem Lim, Green Brian, Maggs A Christine and Siew Moi Phang (2014). | Recipient of the Anugerah Perdana Belia Negara - Dr. Louisa Ponnampalam We are pleased to announce that Dr. Louisa Ponnampalam, a Research Fellow of the Institute of Ocean & Earth Sciences (IOES) has been awarded the Anugerah Perdana Belia Negara (APBN) 2014 (Special Category). She received the award from the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najid Tun Razak in a ceremony at Putrajaya yesterday. The award is in conjunction with the National Youth Day celebration. Dr. Louisa Ponnampalam is a marine biologist specializing in dolphin, whale and dugong ecology and conservation. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Marine Science from the University of Hawaii at Hilo, and a Ph.D. from the University of London's University Marine Biological Station Millport in Scotland. Her research career on these charismatic marine mammals spans 10 years across various seas, including the Arabian Sea, Red Sea, Bering Sea, Gulf of Thailand and the South China Sea. |

| Understanding Air-Ocean-Land Interactions and Processes |
| Air-sea interactions & air-land interactions are the most important mechanisms for the changes in the atmosphere-ocean-biosphere system. It is imperative to understand the magnitude and structural diversity of the air-ocean-land system, to be able to fathom the impacts of external or anthropogenic factors on the environment. |

| The Marine Microbial Ecology Laboratory of the IOES, headed by Associate Prof. Dr. Lee Choon Weng, has focused on profiling the microbial food web in the Malaysian waters: • Carbon fluxes and trophic transfer in marine microbial ecology; • Biological production and loss rates in coastal waters and their relation to CO2 fluxes. • Marine microbiology of coastal waters: temporal and spatial variation of marine bacteria, vibrios and E.coli in coastal waters. • Marine water quality along the Straits of Malacca etc. |

| Technologies for Protection of Marine Ecosystems and Resources |
| The IOES is involved in the development of various technologies for the protection of the marine and coastal environment, especially in the event of sea level rise, increased tropical storms and tsunamis. They include Integrated eco-engineering technologies for shoreline protection (Coastal Bioshield). This system combines both mangrove replanting and engineering structures |

| Law, Policy & Governance and Maritime Culture |
| The Maritime Law and Policy Unit has been contributing to the examination of laws and policies of relevance to the protection of the marine and maritime ecosystem and resources. The human element has become the focus of the Maritime Culture and Geopolitics Research Unit, with documentation of indigenous knowledge of the coastal and maritime communities, especially in the origin and development of rituals, dance and economic uses of marine resources. |

| Increasing Community Awareness and Human Capacity Builidng for Sustainable Management of Marine Ecosystems and Resources. |
| IOES organises scientific expeditions, outreach activities, talks for the public on radio and exhibitions. Expedition and research activities of the IOES have been well publicised in the media through interviews for the newspapers and television. The IOES trains postgraduate students in marine science and technology. The IOES also organizes short-term training workshops to train young scientists, members of government institutions and the industries on various research areas in the protection and management of the marine environment. |
