The Universiti Malaya (UM) Institutional Biosafety and Biosecurity Committee (IBBC) is formed to comply with the Malaysia Laboratory Biosafety and Biosecurity Policy and Guideline, 2015. IBBC is responsible to oversee all activities involving the handling, manipulating, working, using, storing and disposing of infectious and potentially infectious agents/materials and biological toxins in all forms and sizes of laboratories and containment zones in UM. All activities involving infectious and potentially infectious agents/materials and biological toxins must be conducted in accordance to laboratory biosafety standards and best practices to ensure the safety of personnel, university community, protects the environment; and comply with the national and international policies, guidelines and regulations related to laboratory biosafety and biosecurity.
The specific roles of IBBC include:
- Identifying activities which are under the purview of the IBBC
- Reviewing and approving any application to perform activities involving use of infectious and potentially infectious agents/materials and/or biological toxins in a laboratory and defined containment zone.
- Ensuring that all activities involving use of infectious and potentially infectious agents/materials and biological toxins are conducted according to the relevant guidelines.
- Maintaining compliance with the national and international policies, guidelines and regulations related to laboratory biosafety and biosecurity.
