Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical engineering is a very broad field; hence mechanical engineers can work in a variety of different industries as well as design a wide range of products. Mechanical engineers develop, design, build, test, and inspect mechanical devices and systems, such as machines, tools, and engines. Mechanical engineers often work on the newest industrial pursuits, particularly in automation and robotics, alternative energies and nanotechnology.

The Mechanical Engineering Programme offers new opportunities for occupational growth, such as designing production projects to harness developments, improvements of technology in healthcare, or designing more powerful computer chips for the ever-growing digital era. The wide career spectrum opens up opportunities for different genders, different levels of ability, and different interests. The key is that the Mechanical Engineering Programme develops a skilled personnel with competent technical and analytical skills that could be of good use wherever needed.

PEO2- Continuous Personal Development
Engage in lifelong pursuit of knowledge and interdisciplinary learning appropriate for industrial and academic careers.

PEO3- Societal Engagement
Contribute to sustainable development and the well-being of society.

Programme Objectives (PO)

  1. Apply knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals and mechanical engineering specialization to solve complex engineering problems.
  2. Identify, formulate, research, analyse and reach substantiated conclusions along with recommendations for complex mechanical engineering problems, using principles of mathematics, natural science and engineering science.
  3. Develop solutions for complex mechanical engineering systems, components or processes to meet specified needs with appropriate consideration for public health and safety, culture, society and the environment.
  4. Conduct complex investigations using relevant research methodology including literature review, design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of results to derive scientifically sound conclusions.
  5. Create, select and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and modeling, to complex mechanical engineering activities, with an understanding of the limitations.
  6. Apply reasoning informed by contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to complex professional engineering practice.
  7. Understand the impact of complex professional engineering solutions towards society and the environment, and demonstrate knowledge of and the need for sustainable development.
  8. Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of engineering practice.
  9. Communicate effectively on complex engineering activities with both engineers and the community at large through discussions, reports and presentations.
  10. Function effectively as an individual, and as a team member or leader in a multi-disciplinary environment.
  11. Recognise the need to undertake life-long learning and possess the capacity to do so independently.
  12. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of engineering and management/finance principles and apply these to one’s own work as an individual, team member or leader in a multi-disciplinary environment.
