Roundtable Discussion: The 2017 Elections in the Netherlands: Experiences and Lessons for the Future of the EU

Home

Monday, 3rd April 2017 • 2.30 pm • ASEM Room, Asia-Europe Institute

With great pleasure, the Asia-Europe Institute (AEI) cordially invites you to the
Roundtable Discussion “The 2017 Elections in the Netherlands: Experiences and Lessons for the Future of the EU”

The elections in the Netherlands in March 2017 marked the start of a year, in which several national elections have a crucial impact of the further development of the European integration process. Recent developments such as the Eurozone financial crisis (Greece), the arrival of more than 1 million of migrants and refugees fleeing conflicts in the Middle East as well as the “Brexit” referendum in June 2016 have repercussions in all member states of the European Union. In many countries, right-wing populist parties with anti-EU and xenophobic demands are on the rise leading to international speculations about the future of the European Union.

Questions that arise are: How can the recent elections in the Netherlands be interpreted in the light of the above mentioned developments? What kind of lessons can be learned from these elections for the forthcoming elections in France and Germany? What kind of concepts do the EU and its member states offer to deal with the multi-dimensional crisis in Europe?
