The Malaysian Chinese Research Centre (MCRC) was, until recent times, based at the History Department of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University of Malaya. This year, the Centre successfully obtained permission from the university’s governing committee to move to new working premises. After a month of renovation works, the new office, located on the sixth level of the Research Management & Innovation Complex, was officially opened on the afternoon of 14th November 2013.
The opening ceremony began at 2.30 p.m., with the arrival of several honourable guests who were accompanied by Professor Danny Wong, the Head of the MCRC. Numbering among the prominent attendees was the Deputy Chancellor of University Malaya, Professor Awang Bulgiba, as well as eminent scholars, Emeritus Professors Wang Gungwu and Nicholas Tarling. Other participants included representatives from the French School of the Far East, the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall and the Selangor and Kuala Lumpur Hokkien Association.
The unveiling of the MCRC plaque was then carried out by Professor Dr. Awang Bulbiga,following which all guests were invited to enter the new office. Once inside, Professor Danny Wong proceeded to deliver his welcoming address, which elaborated on the MCRC’s founding history. During his speech, Professor Wong also thanked Professor Awang Bulgiba for his support of the centre.
The floor was then taken by Professor Awang Bulgiba. After warmly congratulating the centre on its new acquisition, he stressed the university’s twin goals of enhancing the academic excellence of its staff and students, as well as improving the visibility of the university. He also looked forward to seeing the continuing growth of the MCRC.The ceremony finally drew to a close with the launch of the Centre’s official website, conducted by Professor Awang Bulbiga.
