On 11 November 2012, at 10:00am in the morning,Dean of the College of Politics and Administration of Tianjin Normal University, Professor Ma Depu, was invited to give a talk at the University of Malaya. Members of the MCRC and students eagerly attended the talk.

This seminar was titled “Characteristics of Political Transformation and China’s Political Development.” It analyzes systematically from a macro-perspective the transition in human history from agricultural society to industrial society, characteristics of political transition of the developed states, characteristics of political transition of the developing states, features of China’s political transformation, direction of China’s political transformation, and other issues. Analyzing the future direction of China’s political development was the most important and enlightening part of the talk. Professor Ma contended that the most crucial issue in China’s political development is how to reconcile the potential conflicts between a multinational state and democratic system, and he opined that while one-party system does not encourage competition, multiparty system does not encourage cooperation. Professor Ma systematically analyzed and dissected China’s political development in his talk, which benefitted the audience much.

In the final part of the seminar, Professor Ma concluded with the contention that China must create its own political model and not blindly copy western political models. His excellent seminar was well praised by the audience.
