Great Experience with JCUM

Jeevitha Mariapun

Just after obtaining my MSc, I felt that I needed some experience in research. I approached Julius Centre University of Malaya (JCUM) and was accepted to do a research internship. The internship was a great learning experience in which I was guided by experts in epidemiology and medical statistics. I was also given many opportunities to attend workshops pertaining to epidemiology and statistical computing. Apart from that, I received opportunities to work on various projects and co-author scientific papers with other researchers from the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine and from the University of Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC). The internship was indeed helpful in preparing me to gain the relevant research experience necessary for a doctoral study. I later did my PhD and during my candidature, I gained many opportunities to present at local and international conferences and even had the privilege to attend a workshop on the “Social Determinants of Health” at the University College London (UCL). I also learnt a lot from my PhD supervisors throughout my candidature and am very grateful for all the guidance and encouragement that I have received. I have just submitted my thesis and am currently awaiting my viva voce. I am very appreciative of all the opportunities presented to me by JCUM, which have helped me grow professionally as a public health researcher.
