GUIDELINES ON FINAL YEAR MATHEMATICAL SCIENCE PROJECT COURSE
SJEM3380;SIN3015 Mathematical Science Project (4 Credits)
INTRODUCTION
1. SJEM3380;SIN3015 course is a departmental elective course for students enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, Industrial Mathematics and Computational, Applied Mathematics, Statistics or Actuarial and Financial Mathematics, Acturial Science or Bachelor of Science with Education (Mathematics).
2. Only Year 3 students are allowed to register for this course.
3. The objectives of this course are to :
a. Expose students to the world of mathematical research,
b. Expose students to ideas in mathematics usually not covered in the curriculum,
c. Train students in conducting research through development of self-initiative, new ideas and independent work,
d. Train students to present mathematical ideas effectively and to express critical opinion.
4. Students are advised to contact their potential supervisors directly to discuss and identify the topic for the project.
5. A joint examiner is needed for each project. The supervisor AND the joint examiner are required to sign Form A.
6. It is compulsory for the student to hand in the supervision details needed by the Institute by completing and returning Form A to the Project Course Coordinator before 18 March 2022. Without a complete Form A, the student is not allowed to register for the project course.
7. The supervisor is also required to fill up Form B for the purpose of recording the meetings with the student for continuous assessment. This form has to be submitted to the Project Course Coordinator at the end of the supervision semester.
STUDENT REGISTRATION INFORMATION
1. The student must register BEFORE 11 March 2022.
2. Registration is done ONLINE and by the student after the supervisor and joint examiner have completed and returned Form A to the Project Course Coordinator.
3. THIS COURSE IS NOT OFFERED DURING THE SPECIAL SEMESTER (3).
INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDENTS
1. Students who plan to take up the project course are advised to directly contact and discuss with a potential supervisor regarding the topic of the project to be undertaken.
2. Students are required to keep and update all research work and assignments in a file and submit them to the supervisor upon request.
3. Students must attend the lectures/tutorials of all the other courses they have registered for in the semester.
4. Students are required to meet and discuss with their supervisor regarding project progress, at a frequency determined by the supervisor (but at least once in a month), during the period of project supervision.
5. Students are required to present a seminar of 15 minutes duration on 24 June 2022 (Friday). All the lecturers and students in ISM will be invited to attend.
6. Students are required to prepare a poster of size A3 to summarize and illustrate their work. The soft copy of the poster should be submitted online through Spectrum, latest by 1 July 2022 (Friday).
7. Students are required to complete a typed project report about the project conducted, detailing it completely, clearly and concisely. Transcriptions extracted directly from other sources are not encouraged.
8. Because of current Covid-19 situation, students are only required to submit a softcopy of the project report. This should be completed online through Spectrum, LATEST by 1 July 2022 (Friday). Be sure that Form D is completed during submission. These reports will not be returned to the student unless corrections (as suggested by the supervisor/joint examiner) are required from the student. In such a situation, the student is required to make all corrections and resubmit within two weeks to the Project Course Coordinator.
9. Students who fail to submit the project report within the specified time frame will receive the following penalties: late for up to 3 days - one grade deducted from final grade; late for up to 7 days - two grades deducted from final grade; more than 7 days (grade F). In addition, the best grade awarded will not exceed B. Students who received F may repeat the same project course during the following semester but with a different project topic.
