Biochemistry is the study of the chemistry of life, a bridge between biology and chemistry that studies how complex chemical reactions give rise to life. It is a hybrid branch of chemistry which specializes in the chemical processes in living organisms. It is the study of the structure and function of cellular components, such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, and other biomolecules.
Students are exposed to the most up-to-date knowledge ranging from topics in basic biochemistry to cutting-edge technology employed in protein analysis, molecular biology and proteomics and biochemical toxicology.
The curriculum has been carefully designed and regularly reviewed to enable students to acquire a strong understanding of the basic principles underlying metabolism and regulatory mechanisms. The programme is excellent preparation for students in biochemistry research and professional work, enabling them to manage the challenges of the times.
The department of Biochemistry was originally founded in the Faculty of Medicine in 1963. Teaching was later taken over by the Faculty of Science in 1997.
